The MGM National Harbor Casino has ruffled the feathers of more than a few players after it was revealed that the site will be moving to 6:5 blackjack payouts on some tables, rather than the traditional 3:2.
The move was revealed by The Baltimore Sun, who said that the newly opened casino would be moving to the new payouts by taking advantage of a new regulatory regime, which lets casinos set the rules for their own tables. 6:5 payouts are becoming more and more common across casinos, as the payouts favor the casinos and give the house a larger edge against players.
For players, the move is less advantageous as players who hit blackjack will get less for their money. A $20 blackjack hit would get the player back $24, while the same payout under 3:2 rules would net the player $30.
The MGM National Harbor opened its doors earlier this month, capping off a $1.4 billion construction cost, and the casino is no doubt looking to recoup money the fastest way possible. Unfortunately, the move will keep some players away, as they stick to other casinos in the area that still offer 3:2 to players.
Have you been to the MGM National Harbor yet? What is your take on the casino’s blackjack tables?

MLife is the player’s card used by MGM Resorts. The properties that participate in the card are Aria, Bellagio, Mirage, Monte Carlo, MGM Grand, New York New York, Excalibur, Luxor, Mandalay Bay, Vdara, Gold Spike Tunica, Beau Rivage Biloxi and MGM Grand Detroit. While the Gold Strike in Jean, Nevada and Circus Circus on the Las Vegas Strip are owned by MGM Resorts, they have their own separate player’s clubs.
MLife is unique to other player’s clubs in Las Vegas. While players earn comps by playing video poker, slots and table games, points may also be used by spending money throughout MGM Resorts properties. This includes money spent at hotels, restaurants and shops.
There are five tiers to MLife. The entry tier is Sapphire. Players that earn 25,000 points in a year will reach the Pearl tier. Gold players must earn 75,000 points in a year, while Platinum players must earn 200,000 tier credits. The special Noir tier is by invitation only. This special tier is available to only the top players at the top MGM properties.
Each tier earns 10% more in points than the tier below it. For example, Pearl players earn 10% more points than Sapphire players. Gold players earn 10% more in points than Pearl. Noir players earn 40% more than the bottom tier. Express comps are also earned at the accelerated rate. Higher tiers also enjoy buffet line passes, express hotel check in and guaranteed show tickets and hotel reservations.
Cashback is earned at a rate of .33% at slot machines and .1% at video poker for Sapphire players. Express comps are also earned at this rate. Higher tier players will earn points at a higher rate. Once $10 in cashback is earned it may be redeemed directly at your favorite machine. Express comps may be redeemed at restaurants or hotels that are owned by MGM Resorts that participate in the MLife program.
Table games do not earn cashback but they do earn Express Comps and Tier Points. Each property has their own policy on the minimum wager required to get rated at a table game. Many MGM Resorts properties will require a $25 minimum bet at a table game to receive any comps or rating. Players that wish to bet less than this may want to consider playing video versions of table games. These will not award cashback points but they will give players Express Comps and Tier Points.
