Harrah's Ak-Chin Casino completes 12-story hotel tower, expanded casino, new parking garage
November 10, 2018
Construction on some projects are being finalized for Harrah's AK-Chin Casino. The casino is located in Maricopa and owned by the Ak-Chin Indian Community. Harrah's was contracted by the tribe to manage the property.
Some recent completion of projects are the parking garage and hotel tower. The garage offers parking for 730 vehicles. The hotel is 12 stories tall and offers 230 guest rooms.
A bridge that guests can walk on will connect the Ultra Star Family Entertainment Center to the casino. The entertainment center offers families activities for all ages. Including a bowling alley, movie theater, and dining.
Next for completion will be renovations to the ballroom, new resort rooms, and a new pool area.
200 direct jobs have been created with the expansion project.
April or May of next year is when the project should be completely finished.
Ak-Chin opens new pedestrian bridge to UltraStar Center
March 27, 2018
The new Ak-Chin Circle Pedestrian Bridge opened today. The walkway provides a comfortable way for guests to move between the Ak-Chin Casino and the UltraStar Multi-Tainment Center.
Before the walkway was built, guests would need to either ride a shuttle bus between the properties or walk across the parking lot.
The pedestrian bridge will make visiting the properties more convenient for guests. It is enclosed and offers air conditioning. While guests walk along the bridge they will also have a view of the Ak-Chin Community. The new walkway is 180 feet long.
This is not the only project for the Ak-Chin Casino. The property is currently undergoing the second phase of the expansion. The hotel is adding an additional tower with 200 guest rooms. When completed there will be over 500 rooms available at the hotel. There will also be a new parking garage with several parking floors. A larger conference and event center offering a ballroom space. A new fitness center and spa. Also a new dining venue that will be named Chop Block & Brew restaurant. Many of these projects are expected to be completed by sometime this summer.
The walkway was designed to make it easier for guests to visit both the casino and the entertainment venue easily.
Located in Maricopa, Arizona the casino has been open for 23 years. This is the first and only Native American owned casino that also has a partner for management that is overseas.

Parents, students and educators are attempting to line Baseline Road from 91st Avenue in Phoenix to Goldfield Road in Apache Junction in support of the #RedForEd teacher movement and the push for more education funding.
Called the Stand Out To Stand Up For Education Funding event, the goal was to line all 45 miles from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday with supporters wearing red and waving signs.
Schools have been assigned to different areas of the road, running from west to east across the Valley.
Some schools are also lining Bell Road in the West Valley. In Tucson, supporters are taking similar action along Broadway Road through the city.

6:30 p.m.: 'This might not work out'
There’s a definite nervous energy out here, at least among the folks I’ve met. Weeks of planning and #RedForEd protests come to a head tomorrow. It feels almost frantic.
Phil Collins, a middle-school history teacher, has become the #RedForEd hype man at 48th Street.
“My eyes are wide open. This might not work out,” he said of tomorrow’s walkout. “But what if it does?”
6:30 p.m.: 'The spark that Arizona needs'
Rep. Reginald Bolding Jr., D-Laveen, stood among educators in support for higher teacher pay.
Bolding, a former teacher himself, said it wasn't right for educators to be paid the same salary he received a decade ago. He said the Legislature should end numerous corporate tax cuts and credits to pay for the investment in education rather than siphon funds from Medicaid and other social programs.
'I don't think that we should look to balance the burden on people who live in poverty to fund our teachers. We've seen that happen for too many years,' he said.
Justin Besonen, who teaches seventh grade language arts at Trailside Point, said higher education funding is imperative to giving students across Arizona the classrooms they deserve.
'I'm hoping that this is the spark that Arizona needs to really get behind education and invest in our future,' he said.
6:30 p.m.: 'A palpable energy'
Tom Santilli teaches chemistry at a Alhambra High School classroom. He said he has 32 seats, despite teaching 45 students for the first quarter of the year.
“There’s such a palpable energy that just feels unseen before,” Santilli said of the #RedForEd effort.
Perry Gilo, a 15-year friend of Santilli, said education cuts widened the disparity in education quality between wealthy districts and low-income neighborhoods.
“Lower-income students don’t receive everything that higher-income students receive,” Gilo said. “It’s unfair. Everything should be the same playing field.”
6:15 p.m.: 'It's pretty incredible'
Jennifer Roselli drove along Baseline Road from Greenfield to Signal Butte with her 6-year-old daughter hanging out the window waving her #RedforEd sign at demonstrators.
'It's pretty incredible. I almost cried,' Roselli told her friends from Mesa Public Schools.
Roselli is an occupational therapist who works In Mesa Public Schools, which will close tomorrow in response to the walkout.
Her daughter's school, a charter school, will not close, but Roselli does not plan to send her.

'I'm going to the Capitol. She's going to a friend's house,' she said.
6 p.m.: Smaller class sizes
The #RedForEd plan of “45 miles of red” didn’t really pan out. It’s mostly scattered groups. In the drive from 24th to 48th streets, there was no one.
Lauren White and Shelby Bradshaw, two first grade teachers at Trailside Point Elementary, want increased funding for Arizona teachers and smaller class sizes.
White said many classes have more than 30 students, when she feels the max should be 24. Both said they've seen numerous colleagues flee Arizona for states with higher teacher pay.
6 p.m.: 'Get back the school funds'
Greg Stafford, a teacher at Desert Ridge High School, was most excited to showcase how many different districts were represented near the intersection of Signal Butte and Baseline roads.
He's from Gilbert Public Schools. His neighbor teaches in Tempe's Kyrene School District but decided to join the group out east. Across the street, there were educators from Florence and Apache Junction.
Teachers from different districts don't often get a chance to work together, he said. But he said the #RedForEd movement provided an opportunity to come together as one.
Stafford's been a teacher for 23 years. He said he doesn't know what was the catalyst for this movement, but it was time.
'Teachers are patient. Teachers are kind,' he said, noting that they were understanding during the recession. 'Now it's time. It's time to get back the school funds.'
5:45 p.m: Legislative support
Sen. Catherine Miranda, D-Phoenix, joined parents and educators along Baseline Road.
Miranda said per-pupil funding should be raised from roughly $3,000 to $5,000 without siphoning funds from the arts and special education.
She said Gov. Doug Ducey has permission from the people to raise taxes to pay for the teacher salary increases.
5:30 p.m. Not quite a solid line
Organizers promised 45 miles of support, a solid red line drawn all the way across the Valley’s southern end.
That didn’t quite pan out.
Instead, the protesters have clumped into scattered groups: a dozen here, 20 there, and then miles of empty sidewalk.
5:30 p.m. 'Only three middle fingers'
Outside of a shopping center at Baseline and Signal Butte roads, about two dozen educators and supporters shook #RedforEd signs toward the passing rush hour traffic.
'Come on, give us a honk,' Sheryl Anderson said with nearly every passing car.
Anderson, an Apache Junction teacher, and Sylvia Moreland, a parent, said the response so far had been pretty supportive.
'Only three middle fingers,' Moreland said.
Another passerby dropped off several bottles of Gatorade for the group.
'I'm pretty old and I haven't seen anything like this since the '60s.' Anderson said. 'It was a good cause then, and it's a good cause now.'
5:15 p.m. At the West end
Martha Avendado, a preschool teacher at Paseo Pointe Elementary, said she makes enough money now, but made $900 every two weeks when she worked at Fowler Elementary.
She said she's here to support her fellow teachers who are still trying to make ends meet.
5 p.m. We found the East end!
The eastern anchor of the demonstration began just past Signal Butte Road in east Mesa.
Roberto Reveles and David Coward, neighbors from Gold Canyon kept driving west along Baseline Road until they saw red.
At about 4:30 p.m., they spotted Diana and Bob Grubb standing outside Sunland Springs Village just past Signal Butte Road on Baseline.
Together, the four of them began the eastern anchor of the #RedforEd demonstration to a chorus of repetitive honks and encouraging cheers.
Frys 51st And Baseline
'I think the public is waking up to (funding education) and it's encouraging. It's exciting, in fact,' Reveles, 85, said.
The Grubbs' daughter is the principal at a local school and Coward is a former substitute teacher from the Apache Junction school district.
'We think it's time we got some funding into these schools,' Diana Grubb said.
The group expected more people to join the east edge over time because the Apache Junction schools weren't released until 4 p.m.

4:30 p.m. They're out there
Sherri Toussaint left her 10th-grade classroom at South Mountain High School in summer-break shape. She unplugged the computers and cleaned out the food. Books went onto shelves. Folders went into drawers.
Then, she locked the door and headed to Baseline Road, where she was the first protester to arrive at the corner of 7th Street.
There, she held her paper sign high and smiled as waves of cars honked in support.

'I don't know what the next steps are going to be,' Toussaint said as a dozen red-clad educators gathered across the street. But she’s walking out anyway.
'I feel pretty strongly about it,' she said.
By 4:45 p.m., the small group across Baseline had grown to more than 25 people. They sang along to The Beatles and Twisted Sister as rush-hour traffic built into a symphony of honks.

Supporters of the #RedForEd movement have begun to gather on freeway overpasses and along Baseline Road. They hope to line the full 45 miles.
